Doris Secures Spot in Irish Squad But Joe McCarthy Misses Out
Newly reappointed manager the Ireland coach has named captain Caelan Doris in his Irish team for the autumn Tests, however lock McCarthy misses out.
Doris, absent from play since having a shoulder operation in early May, has come back to Leinster training, but it remains unclear if he will be fit to face New Zealand in Chicago on November 1.
Lock McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the opening Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.
Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster winger Nash are also absent due to fitness concerns, and full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing hip surgery after the Lions tour.
Dublin province forward McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only uncapped player in the 34-player group, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says uncapped Munster pair Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped Connacht wing Bolton will travel to Chicago as "backup".
Following facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their 2016 meeting, the team host the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world title holders the Springboks in the Irish capital.
"There's an exciting look to the squad and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," said Farrell, who returns to national team duties after a break to lead the Lions tour to Australia.
In a largely familiar-looking squad, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will once again compete for the first-choice fly-half position. The number 10 jersey is remains available, as the two players set to play against each other for the first occasion in the upcoming URC game at the Dublin venue.
Frawley is the third number 10 chosen as the coach deciding not to calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.
At number 9, the Ireland boss has picked British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer Test victories over the Lelos and Portugal. Additionally, there is a recall for Connacht's Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an veteran group of midfield options. Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to cover for Keenan at full-back.
Wingers James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. O'Brien impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over the Lelos and Portugal.
Paddy McCarthy is the sole new addition in the Irish forwards. The loose-head prop has started two of his province's three United Rugby Championship matches so far and featured in Ireland A's defeat by England in Bristol previously.
McCarthy was included in interim boss O'Connell's summer squad, but did not receive a cap.
Munster second row Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those Tests, is kept in the squad, while experienced Ulster second row Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.
Conan, who started each of the Lions Tests during the tour, is poised to deputise for Doris if the captain fails to recover full fitness in time to play New Zealand.
The national team will assemble in Dublin on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on Tuesday.
